980 ON REMAND OVER BODA BODA OPERATION IN KAMPALA

President Museveni’s directive to work on Boda Boda cyclists has left many shading tears especially in the city center.

In just a space of two months, over 980 Boda Boda cyclists have been arrested by the police and just a few of these cyclists have managed to manouvre through these arrests.

Police say on a daily basis a minimum of over 30 suspects fall victim of arrest with their motorcycles impounded and parked at different police stations.

The officer in charge of traffic at the central police station Julius Luyima says the operation has managed to bring back sanity especially in his area of operation, he adds that riders can now follow traffic regulations and he commended the president for acknowledging the operation.

He says that if such operations continue to surface not only in the Boda Boda industry but to other road users as well, the country will be in position to reduce at the rate of accidents that seems to be on the increase of late.

Luyima who seemed aggressive said we need acknowledge road users on the role of zebra crossing that many road users especially in the city center had continuously defied, his operation on zebra crossing has left many complaining but he insists that road users should respect traffic regulations.

When we asked the police spokes person for a comment about complaints from the public about the arrests mounted to cyclists, he said they should not blame anybody for this operation not even Julius Luyima for this because he is following a presidential directive.

Kayima said it’s high time we bring back sanity to the road users especially in the city center and along the highways, he says many have lost their lives because of laxity along high ways simply because stubborn drivers.

Those motorcycles impounded a without proper traffic documentations like owning one without third party insurance, riding more than two passengers, riding along the pavement which is meant for pedestrian use, riding without an helmet and many other offences.
