Three people are charged before Buganda Road Court in connection to the recent theft of shillings one million from a bullion van in the city on December 30 last year. Godfrey Makhoha, 33 years, a security officer Personnel attached to Security Group Uganda Ltd,
Peter Agama, 25, a driver attached to C.T and Janet Awor, 19, a house wife to Francis Dida a resident of Awach Otuke sub county, Abim District.
Two of the suspects Makhoha and Agama denied the charge of stealing from a vehicle and were remanded to Luzira prison till January 21 since the investigations are incomplete. Prosecution alleges that the duo and others still at large on December 30 last year, between Diamond Trust Bank Kikuubo branch and Diamond Trust bank main branch on Jinja Road, stole shillings one billion the property of Diamond Trust Bank from a billion van Reg. No UAG 857B.
Awor Janet faces a separate charge of possessing suspected stolen property contrary to section 315 (1) of the Penal Code Act. She was also remanded to Luzira prison till January 21. Prosecution alleges that on December 31 last year, at Awach Otuke sub county in Abim District, Awor upon being searched by a police officer, she was found with stolen money up to over shillings 25 million, the money believed to be part of the stolen shillings one billion from a billion van in Kampala the previous day.
The suspects who appeared before Grade One Magistrate Joan Aciro, did not have a lawyer to represent them in court. It is alleged that the suspects mainly the guards had collected the money in question from three different banking points in Kampala and were supposed to deposit it with the Central Bank.
But along the way, they diverted the bullion van to Rubaga Division from where they took away about a million shillings, shared the loot and fled to different directions. The police only recovered shillings 150 from the abandoned bullion van. One of the suspects fled to Kumi where he was netted by the police.
